High-tech Weapons

The XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System dubbed name "the Punisher" is a new shoulder fired grenade launcher that was developed for the U.S. Army by  by Heckler & Koch and Alliant Techsystems. This 25 mm grenade launcher comes with a built in laser rangefinder, so the user can set the desired distance at which the round can detonate. The weapon has a ballistic computer built-in that sends information to a microchip embedded in the round. According to the developer, this is the first small arms weapon to use smart technology.

The Army has already invested $65.8 millions to finalize the design and it is expected to enter service in 2013. This new weapon is a good example of an emerging technology that has created a new market for smart weapons.
